The complete guide to buying diamonds

How do you know if a diamond is of high quality, what is a gemological certificate and is it possible to get an exchange note? All the things that are important to pay attention to when buying jewelry with a diamond

Whether it is a marriage proposal or a pampering gift for yourself, buying a piece of jewelry with a diamond is an exciting event that is naturally accompanied by a lot of compliments. Beyond the fact that it is a deceptively cheap item, the buying process is often accompanied by a lack of knowledge that leads to the fear of fakes or mainly – that you paid a lot of money and did not get the right value for it.

In order to help you in the process, we have prepared a detailed guide for you on all the important things to pay attention to when you come to purchase diamonds, online or physically in a store.

Check the quality of the diamond

The quality of the diamond, or in the professional language – the rating of the diamond, is what determines its price and is influenced by 4 parameters: color, cut, cleanliness and weight.

Color – when it comes to white diamonds (there are also colored diamonds like Pink Diamond or blue), the more transparent and clear the diamond, the more expensive it is. The colors of the diamonds are symbolized by letters, where the letters E D F denote the most transparent and rare diamonds, and the letter Z denotes diamonds with the least good color. In this case the diamond will usually be stained yellow, gray or orange.

Tip from us: Limited on a budget? Diamonds marked with G/H will give a good contribution to your money and will still be transparent and beautiful, even if they are not at the highest level of transparency.

Cutting – rough diamonds are mined in nature in a large piece of glass when they lack luster and brilliance. Therefore, to become the diamonds we know, they must go through a process of retouching and polishing. When talking about the shape of the cut, two options are considered – a polished stone with a round finish (Round Brilliant Cut), or stones polished in any other shape (Fantasy Cut).

Tip from us: Confused about which shape to buy? Play it safe: diamonds with a round finish give the best light reflection, compared to diamonds with complicated shapes, which will ensure a higher return on your investment.

cleanliness – a natural diamond is never perfect, And it has natural flaws. The defects are divided into two: external defects which in most cases can be repaired by brushing; and internal defects that can only be seen with special binoculars that magnify 10 times, and are usually undetectable to the naked eye. The cleaner and free of defects the diamond is, the more expensive it is.

Tip from us: Choosing diamonds marked with VS (Very Slight) provides a good level of cleanliness on the one hand, and on the other hand is not too expensive. Above this level the price increases considerably, and below it the defects may be visible and damage the beauty of the diamond.

Weight – The choice of carat weight does depend on the amount of money you want to spend, but even if you have already decided on a budget, you will be surprised to know that there is another way to save. For this it is important to understand how diamonds are measured: the weight of the diamond is measured in carats, with one carat equaling 0.2 grams and 5 carats being one gram. In addition to its weight in grams, the carat is also measured in points, with one carat equaling 100 points.

Tip from us: When following the points method, it is recommended not to choose beautiful round numbers. A drop of even one point, which will not change anything for you as a buyer, can cause a very significant change in the price. For example – if you choose a diamond weighing 99 points you will pay half the price compared to the exact same diamond weighing 100 points.

Ask for a warranty certificate

When you buy diamonds, make sure that in addition to the warranty certificate for the jewelry, you also receive a gemological certificate – which is the stone’s identity card, detailing all the diamond’s properties (cleanliness, color, finish, symmetry and other characteristics). The gemological certificate is issued to a diamond after it has undergone a professional examination to determine its value, dimensions and measuring its properties under a microscope by a qualified professional.

Tip from us: at the end of the transaction, make sure you have all the documents – an invoice confirming the purchase, a warranty certificate and a gemological certificate.

Check the return policy

Each diamond store offers different conditions, so it’s a good idea to find out in advance what the parameters of each store are: how much time you have to return the diamond and receive a monetary credit, and within how much time the diamond can be upgraded. In most cases, the leading chains will allow you at least 14 days to return the jewelry and receive a full monetary credit. In the diamonds of the stock exchange, refunds are given up to 30 days.

In addition, you should make sure that the store allows you to upgrade the diamond without losing its original value. This means that if you want to upgrade to a larger diamond, you can get a credit for the value of the diamond you came with, and then add to it the amount required for the size of the new diamond. Diamonds of the stock exchange allows for a 100% upgrade while maintaining the original value.

Tip from us: Since it is an expensive piece of jewelry, you should also check the store’s payment policy in advance. At Bursa Diamonds, you can divide the purchase into 36 interest-free payments and you will receive a lifetime warranty.

Order and cleanliness

Make sure that the store from which you purchased the jewelry allows you to send it to them for cleaning if necessary.

In conclusion

The market is flooded with shops offering diamond substitutes, such as zircons, synthetic diamonds or “treated” diamonds. Therefore, we emphasize and say that our recommendation is to buy diamonds only in certified stores that specialize in the industry, such as Bursa Diamonds, or in recognized and well-known chains. Although you will pay a higher price, you will know that you are getting the real product, including warranty, and not a replacement or imitation. At Bursa Diamonds you can find a wide variety of diamond jewelry from engagement coins to < a href="/?product_cat=bracelets">diamond bracelets.
